Laissez les bons temps rouler, or “let the good times roll.” Whichever way you say it, Mardi Gras is all about indulging in food, fun and a festive atmosphere—and it’s easy to enjoy all three here at Coastal Grill!
Read on as we share a few key tips for celebrating Mardi Gras on March 5th, as well as some New Orleans-inspired dishes worth enjoying on the big day. Take a look.
We know Mardi Gras is a day of celebration—but you may be wondering, what exactly are we celebrating, anyway?
The name of the day is French for “Fat Tuesday,” and refers to the Tuesday before Lent begins. Because observers would fast and give up luxuries during Lent, Mardi Gras became their last chance to indulge in the revelry of food, fun and celebration for celebration’s sake. So even if you don’t fast during Lent, Mardi Gras still serves as the perfect excuse to kick back, relax and enjoy some serious fun in the middle of the week!
Wherever you celebrate Mardi Gras this year, you can’t go wrong by dressing up in three characteristic colors: purple, for justice; green, for faith; and gold, for power. Throw on some beads, a festive hat or a fancy outfit for a perfectly themed look.
Of course, for many, the best part about Mardi Gras is the food! After all, it’s no surprise that a holiday that’s all about indulgence offers up some seriously delicious ways to celebrate…
Because New Orleans is known worldwide for its vibrant, long-running Mardi Gras tradition, many of our favorite Mardi Gras foods come from there. Florida’s location—just a few states away on the Gulf Coast—allows for those rich Cajun flavors to travel over with ease.
Wondering what to enjoy on Mardi Gras? Here are a few of our favorite picks…
BBQ Shrimp Orleans
This flavorful, snackable dish is a delicious way to kick off the Mardi Gras festivities. It combines the spirit of New Orleans with the city’s love of shrimp for a delicious medley, one that’s especially apropos for the holiday fun!
Po’ Boys are peak New Orleans—and while they may be called “po,” the flavors inside are truly rich! You have your pick of surf or turf. Shrimp and Oyster Po’ Boys are served up with a delicious Remoulade, while our Chicken and Andouille Po’ Boys come with a zesty smoked tomato mayo.
Chicken & Andouille Gumbo
The Cajun classic of gumbo is perfect for enjoying on Mardi Gras. Our Chicken & Andouille Gumbo comes is a medley of sausage and pulled chicken with diced onions, celery, green and red peppers, garlic and peanut oil, topped off with rice for a dish you’re sure to love.
“Mardi Gras” is French, after all! Celebrate the day with a French classic, Crème Brulee. Its sweet flavor and rich, custardy base is the best way to cap off a hearty Mardi Gras meal.
For more Mardi Gras fun…
In addition to a delicious Mardi Gras meal, there are plenty of ways to have some celebratory fun around town. Before dinner, why not enjoy an outdoor adventure at Port Orange’s Cracker Creek? Known for its lush, swampy waterways and canopy of green that hangs lazily over the water, it’s the closet local fix for those craving a New Orleans-eque Bayou adventure. Plus, it’s sure to work up an appetite of Mardi Gras proportions!
After dinner, you can cap off your day with a trip to the Mardi Gras Parade on Flagler Avenue in New Smyrna Beach? The parade kicks off at 7 p.m., and offers revelers the chance to catch some beads, dance to Mardi Gras music and enjoy the festive spirit with family and friends.
